Foreign influences on Turkish throughout history and the phonological and morphological analyses of English loanwords in Turkish

In this thesis, it is aimed at making a contribution to the highly discussed topic,loanwords. Taking the influences of intercultural relations on language into account, theforeign influences on Turkish throughout history and how they affect the language,especially the lexicon of language have been examined. English, being the language thatTurkish is borrowing a lot of words these days, has been chosen as the target language.The focus of this thesis is the phonological and morphological analyses of Englishloanwords in modern Turkish. For this analysis, the phonological and morphologicalcharacteristics of Turkish and English, which belong to two different language families,have been studied and to what extent the English loanwords conform to thephonological and morphological patterns of Turkish and in what way they influence thelinguistic aspects of Turkish have been examined.The 1st chapter of the present study introduces the terms borrowing andloanwords. The 2nd chapter, includes the historical development of Turkish languageand the foreign influences on the language throughout history. However, not all thecharacteristics of Turkish throughout history have been mentioned, but the chapter islimited with the foreign influences on Turkish, especially on its lexicon.In chapter 3, the method of the study has been described and the phonologicaland morphological features of English and Turkish have been set forth. Then, Englishloanwords found in Türkçe Sözlük, Türkçe?deki Yabancı Sözcükler Sözlüğü, YabancıKelimelere Karşılıklar and Türk Dilinin Etimoloji Sözlüğü have been analyzedphonologically and morphologically and the changes have been illustrated.In the conclusion part, the results of the study have been evaluated. Based on theresults, it can be said that although English and Turkish belong to different family oflanguages, there is a close relationship between them due to some political, economic,cultural, commercial and military reasons. The results of these relations are evident inthe phonological and morphological system of Turkish. When the English loanwords inTurkish have been analyzed, it is seen that while some of these words are made toconform to the phonological and morphological patterns of Turkish, some adapt toEnglish language adopting its rules.
