Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of forsus appliances on the temporomandibular joint in patients having Class II division 1 malocclusion using centric relation (CR) records and CBCT imaging. This study was conducted with 35 patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion with a mean age of 14 years. All patients were planned to be treated with a fixed functional ortodontic appliance Power centric registration described by Roth were recorded using mandibular position indicator (MPI) and anterior-posterior joint spaces were measured on CBCT images at the beginning and end of fixed functional treatment. In MPI records, the most prevalent types of directional change in condylar position were inferior and distal. The amount of vertical displacement was greater than sagittal displacement at the beginning and end of fixed functional appliance treatment. Twenty three subjects (%65,7) showed a CR-CO discrepancy of ?2mm before forsus treatment. The magnitude of displacement was smaller after fixed functional treatment and there were statistically significant decreases for vertical displacement. While the patients who showed a CR-CO discrepancy greater than 2mm before fixed functional treatment had a statistically significant decrease for condylar displacement after fixed functional treatment, the patients who showed a CR-CO discrepancy within 2mm didn?t have any statistically significant difference for condylar displacement after the treatment. In CBCT images, the condyle was found positioned anteriorly in the glenoid fossa at the begining and end of the forsus treatment. There were no statistically significant differences regarding condylar position between pretreatment and posttreatment records.Further research should be conducted on long term effects of fixed functional treatment on TMJ with larger samples of Class II division 1 malocclusion.
