FRANCE AND TURKEY TOWARDS ARAB SPRING Canan YILDIZ French and Turkish foreign policies have for years been the subject of radical transformation. In France, this transformation was initiated by President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. Just after he became President, he began a process of breaking with previous national policy and especially France's "Arab policy". In Turkey the transformation started with the newly-elected Ak Parti in 2002, which has worked towards a multilateral approach for Turkey, based on a "zero problem" policy with all neighbours and especially with the Arab countries. Both policies have turned towards the Middle East by developing economic, cultural and political relations. However, the "Arab spring" has generated unintended consequences in the region and may be reaching world powers in ways that they did not expect. The French and Turkish reactions towards the Libyan and Syrian crises are pertinent for the subject of this thesis, because it provides the opportunity to describe how they have been forced to adjust their external action towards the Middle-Eastern countries.
