50 7. SUMMARY This study was carried out to determine bacterial growth in prior to disinfection of operating room air and surface. Additionally, we investigated efficiancy of disinfection procedure used. In the study, cultures obtained from for operating, sterilization and recovery rooms, as well as corridors, in Fırat Medicine Center, Fırat University were investigated. To evaluate disinfection, before and after procedure, 78 samples from 6 regions for air, 494 samples from 1 1 narrow shaped surfaces and 208 samples from 7 wide surfaces were seperately taken. Petty dishes in diametre of 10 cm were used to collect sample from the air. Before and after disinfection procedure, open plaque was left to the same area of the rooms for 20 minutes. The samples were incubated at 3T C for 24-48 hours, then evaluated. Smears from previously targeted points of surfaces were collected by swabs drowned into brain heart solution. All samples were cultured within 30 minutes and incubated at 37° C in aerobic conditions for 24-48 hours, then evaluated. Positive culture counts were decreased from 66.6% to 47.4% (p<0.001) after disinfection with Aseptanios HPH for the air. Chlorospray was used in narrow shaped surfaces, such as operating lights and tables. Positive culture counts were 17.2% before disinfection, then after procedure it diminished to 2.2% (pO.00001). On the other hand, Bacteranios was used in wide surfaces, such as walls and floor. The number of positive cultures was 38.9% before disinfection procedure, then lowered to 10.0% (pO.00001). When investigated the samples obtained from all areas before and after disinfection in regard with means of colony counts per culture, Staphylococcus epidermidis from 9.9 to 2.6, Staphylococcus aureus fromll.l to 4, Pseudomonas aeruginosa from 28.5 to 0, Serratia spp. from 6.3 to 2, Yersinia spp. 1 to 0, Enterobacter spp. from 3.6 to 0, Corynebacterium spp. from 4.6 to 1 were decreased. When considered in general, means of colony counts for all the bacteries was 9.5 and 1.2 before and after disinfection, respectively. The rate of decrease of 92.8% was found to be statistically significant (p<0.0001). As a result, disinfection aimed at air, surfaces and equipment is vitally important in operating rooms. It is possible to reduce microorganisms by daily cleaning and monthly surface and air disinfections.
