Prof. Dr. N. Zehra BERÇİNJune 2009, 114 pagesIn this study, two dramas by Friedrich Dürrenmatt were analysed contrastively with their translations in Turkish. The first work which is titled Die Physiker was translated by Mustafa Tüzel into Turkish as Fizikçiler and the second work appearing with the title Der Mitmacher was translated by Yücel Erten into Turkish as Uyarca. For these two works there is one translation each in Turkish.Friedrich Dürrenmatt used idioms and proverbs in his works in a masterly manner. Therefore, both the translation method by which cultural expressions were transferred into Turkish, as well as the equivalence of such transfers have aroused great interest, since the translation methods were used in two different manners which might be defined as word by word translation and free translation. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the equivalence found in these texts. In this context, the aim was that the respective study should act as a concrete pattern for all translator candidates. Keywords: Equivalence, literary translation, semantics, linguistic games
