Abstract (EN)

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by certain disorders such as hypertension, obesity, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Several studies indicated that curcumin plays active role against to dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate adipokines such as fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP-4), irisin, fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) and chemerin with possibility beneficial effects curcumin treatment on glucose homeostasis, insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation in fructose induced metabolic syndrome rat models. For this purpose, 24 male adult rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: control (Group 1), 20% fructose (Group 2), 20% fructose and 100 mg / kg curcumin (Group 3), 20% fructose and 200 mg / kg curcumin (Group 4). At the end of the 8th week, animals were sacrificed and blood, adipose tissue and liver tissue samples were taken. Body weight and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were measured, the lee index was calculated. Serum glucose and plasma lipoproteins levels were determined with using an autoanalyzer. Other parameters were measured by Elisa-assay method. In our study, MetS was successfully formed by observing increased serum glucose, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in Group 2 compared to Group 1 (p<0.008). Serum and liver total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and liver thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) levels in Group 2 increased significantly compared to Group 1, while the levels of these parameters in Group 3 and Group 4 were significantly decreased compared to Group 2 (p<0.008). Serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and chemerin were significantly increased in Group 2 compared to Group 1, while TNF-α, IL-6 and chemerin in Group 3 and TNF-α ve IL-6 in Group 4 significantly decreased compared to Group 2 (p <0.008). Liver FGF-21 level of Group 2 diminished significantly compared to Group 1 (p <0.008), while the FGF-21 level of Group 3 and Group 4 increased significantly compared to Group 2 (p<0.008). Adipose tissue AFABP-4 level of Group 2 and Group 3 increased significantly compared to Group 1 on the other hand AFABP-4 decreased significantly in Group 4 compared to Group 2 (p<0.008). Adipose tissue irisin level in Group 2 decreased significantly compared to Group 1 whereas irisin level in Group 3 increased significantly compared to Group 2 (p<0.008). This study revealed that curcumin treatment has beneficial effect against MetS.
