Haydar Rüştü Öktem as a journalist and politician (1885-1951)

Haydar Rüştü Öktem was born in Gümüşhane in 1885. He had to continue his education in different cities, because his father worked as an interrogator in different cities. He became to be the journalist when he was studying medicine in Istanbul. He went to Thessaloniki in 1911 after working in Geveze, Cadaloz and Cihad in Istanbul. He published a newspaper which was named Yıldırım in Thessaloniki. After the invasion of Thessaloniki by Greeks, he went to Izmir. He became the owner and head writer of the Anadolu with a short period. During the period of armistice, Duygu -newspaper- was published. The importance of Duygu and Anadolu is that struggling with Greek media during the armistice period. After the invasion of İzmir, he was faced with the danger of arrest. After having been hide in Izmir for a while, he succeeds to leave the city. In this period he took on various tasks in Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara. After that, he went to Antalya and published Anadolu in Antalya, which was the first local newspaper in Antalya. He returned to İzmir after the end of the invasion. The Anadolu published again in İzmir. After returning to Izmir, he completed his identity within being a politician and journalistic. He worked as a member of parliament in Denizli in the periods of II, III, IV, V, as a member of parliament in Tunceli the period of VI and Izmir in the period of VIII. Despite being a member of parliament, he continued to write articles in Anadolu. He died on August 11, 1951. Anadolu had to close down in September of 1954 due to financial difficulties.
