The assessment of primary school?s situations in terms of standards in gaziantep city center and environment health

In the research, the aim is to assess the elementary school?s environmental health in the city center and determine their situation of correspondence to standards of TSE?s ?TS 9518 City Elementary School-General Rules? and ?TS 12014 Environment Health-Schools.?It is a definitive research carried out by using a questionnaire developed by researcher in all of the elementary schools in Gaziantep. The data obtained have been assessed on the SPSS(13.0).Among the 134 elementary schools in the Gaziantep which were included in the research the total of 216694 students (48% girls and 52% boys) were studying in these schools. 85.1% of school have dual education, numbers of students in class change between 14 and 90, and 59.2% of classes have more than 40 students. The construction dates of school buildings were between 1923-2006 and 40% of them were constructed between the years of 1998 and 2006.43.3% of the schools don?t have any alarm system for fire and disasters, dustbins without lid and bags were used in classes of all schools. 31.8% of school buildings had clean classrom walls. It was established that 52.4% of schools with normal education has had clean toilets, and 21.2% of schools with dual education has had clean toilets.In the terms of standards only 4.5% of schools has had enough toilet cabins for boys and only 5.2% of schools for girls. In 85% of schools? gardens playground for per student were inconvenient for the standards.Unpacked foods were selling in 92.5% of school canteens. There were hawkers near 32.8% of schools, internet-cafes near 43.3% of them, cafes near 38.8% of them, factories near 2.2% of them, game-saloons near 1.5% of them and pubs-bars near 0.7% of them. The gardengates of 20.9% of schools were connected to the main road.The situation of school buildings and their surrounding conditions and their physical capacities for students and pesonnel in the terms of health standards were not sufficient. In order to avoid these problems, standards should be taken into in the level of planning of the construction of schools.Key Words: School Health, School Environment Health, Standards.
