Food wasting behaviours questionnaire: Adaptation to Turkish, validity and reliability study

The aim of this study is to adapt the Food Wasting Behaviours Questionnaire to Turkish and evaluate its validity and reliability. The study was conducted between January-March 2024 with 421 adult individuals aged 19-74 living in Kayseri. Data were collected by face-to-face survey method. The translation-back-translation method was used to adapt the questionnaire to Turkish. For the content validity evaluation, the Content Validity Index (CVI) was calculated for each item using the Davis Technique, and the lowest value was found to be 0.83. Face validity was ensured by researchers, experts, a Turkish Language expert, and a pilot study on a sample of 30 individuals. For construct validity, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and item analyses were conducted on a sample of 219 individuals, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted on another sample of 202 individuals. As a result of EFA, three items with low factor loadings were removed from the questionnaire. After the items were removed, an EFA was conducted and it was seen that the lowest factor loading was 0.477 and the highest was 0.977. As a result of EFA, a structure with 6 factors and 27 items was founded. To support construct validity, item analyses were also carried out, and it was concluded that the items were considered sufficient to distinguish the feature to be measured and that all items were compatible with the whole questionnaire. The model obtained from EFA was confirmed by CFA and it was seen that the data confirmed the model. To evaluate the questionnaire's reliability, the calculated Cronbach Alpha values were found to be between 0.700-0.924, and the questionnaire was found to be reliable in terms of internal consistency. To measure invariance over time, intra-class correlation values were calculated and found between 0.787-0.896, and it was observed that the questionnaire was sufficiently reliable in terms of repeated measurements. The Turkish adaptation of the Food Wasting Behaviours Questionnaire is a valid and reliable questionnaire consisting of 6 factors and 27 items that evaluate food waste behaviours in consumers.
