3 H ' j- * SUMMARY Postgraduate Study Status of women in slums : Sample of Elazığ- Karşıyaka district. Dilek Ulu Fırat Universty Institue of Social Sciences Department of Sociology 2000, Page : 131 This is a field study on "Status of women in slums". Women who have been living in Karşıyaka district, one of the slums of Elazığ and have rights to vote are the subject of our research. To support the sampling systematical coincidence sampling method has been used. In this study, status of women in the social and economical life have been searched adding to their ages, marital status, education levels, family structures, marriage types and other demographical features by applying a poll containing 63 questions to 1 12 women. At the end of the research, it was seen that most of the women who are living there were born in the villages and migrated from the villages. More than half of those women who are composed of young adults were uneducated and most of them are not working. They have adapted to urban life and gained a better status in comparison with to the rural life in terms of social life standards; in spite of their keeping traditional rural style on the aspect of economical life. As a result it can be said that, the women in the slums are relatively away from the behaviors peculiar to rural area, but this is also valid for the attitudes and behaviors peculiar to the urban life style.
