Habitats of the future: A spatial study on Mars

Once human began to act as a thinking being, he also began to create a defined space where he felt secure. Human ensured that security by building shelters with the instinct of putting himself in a shell with borders against the vacuum of the universe and the dangers of the nature that he could not make sense of. Thus, living spaces have meant a private shell of security in all ages of humanity. Throughout history, changes on the social and the human level have progressed by adding new meanings to living spaces. Thus, the most private space of human has existed as a shelter, played the role of a residence by developing based on needs, and become a living space in a more general sense by transforming into a dynamic pattern in which the whole daily life of human is to be joined together both today and in the future; and it was deemed suitable to discuss the concepts of shelter, tent, residence, house, and household, which have appeared throughout history, as a 'living space' in the thesis study when interpreted based on today's and future dynamics. In the study, the sample of Mars was selected, on which institutions, foundations, private companies, scientists, and designers have intensively worked as the space of the future in recent years and which aims to create new answers to different living conditions. The setup of the settlement reflecting from the entirety to the inner space was analysed especially based on projects developed for competitions, and it was aimed to form a base for future solutions and their basic concepts by examining the configuration of the space and the features of the inner space.
