An assessment of reconstruction implementations in traditional Konya civil architecture examples

The reconstruction, which means the rebuilding (reshaping) of a completely destroyed or partially damaged structure with original materials and construction techniques, is a controversial concept in terms of preservation techniques since its emergence. Finding a place in preservation theory of the reconstruction concept is dated to the end of the Enlightenment Age. The great damage of the two world wars to European city centers in the early twentieth century, in particular, paved the way for reconstruction. In recent years, the increasing diversity of restoration actions in the whole country is also seen in Konya. The study investigates the reasons of prefering reconstruction as an intervention method in the restoration projects and application processes of traditional Konya houses in recent years. The method of reconstruction is remarkable in the steps taken in front of the preservation of traditional civil architectural works on the scale of Konya city center. It is aimed to evaluate the selection of the reconstruction technique in line with the approval and authorization processes carried out by the relevant public and institutions within the conceptual framework and the in force protection legislation on national and international platforms. Within the scope of this study, the reconstruction applications of the selected houses from Konya city center and the region known as Old Meram Vineyards; are evaluated in the terms of position, material, ownership, plan scheme, construction technique, facade layaout, decoration features and nex function characteristics and authenticity criteria. The changes in before and after the application of the selected structures were compared, the results of the reconstruction were found to be positive in terms of location, plan scheme, facade layout, decoration characteristics and negative in terms of construction technique, building material, function and authenticity for the selected examples of traditional civil architecture.
