The effect of systematic instruction method on the achievements and permanence of students in traditional Turkish art music

This study has been carried out to determine the effect of systematic instruction method on the achievements of students and to assess the situation in the process of planning, implementation and evaluation in the traditional Turkish art music offered in the program of music education program at the departments of music education under the faculties of education.The study is comprised of two parts. In the first part an assessment of the situation in the process of planning, implementation and evaluation in the traditional Turkish art music offered in the program of music education program at the departments of music education under the faculties of education was performed through a descriptive study. In this part, the data necessary in order to settle the problems were collected through a questionnaire form. In the second part, the effect of systematic instruction model on the achievement of students was dealt with. The data necessary to settle the problems given in this part were collected through an achievement test and the curriculum of traditional Turkish art music.In the analysis of the data SPSS 15 (The Statistical Package for the Social Science) software was employed. The analyses of the quantitative data given in the first part were performed through frequency (f) and percentage (%) values, while in the second part Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, F test, Tukey test and Friedman F test were employed.The results of the analyses suggest that the courses of traditional Turkish art music are offered in a manner that doesn?t cover the elements of contemporary instructional programs and the most commonly employed instructional program is Descriptive Program. Besides, it has also been found out that the instructors of the course of the traditional Turkish art music do not share common grounds insetting the contents and the subject matter, they use most commonly the exposition method, demonstration method and question-answering method. Moreover it has been determined that the materials such as board, cassette, cd, cd player etc. are mainly used during instruction. On the other hand, it has been found out that in the phases of evaluation-measurement in the course of traditional Turkish art music open-ended exam method along with oral exam method has been widely used, the duration of the courses has been found short and the most commonly used course books are the theory and technique of Turkish Music by İsmail Hakkı Özkan, various audio materials and the course of Turkish music by Zeki Yılmaz.As a result of the analyses of the achievement tests, according to the systematic instruction method there is statistically significant difference in favor of the experiment group between the scores of comprehension, total achievement and total permanence of the experiment group and the scores of comprehension, total achievement and total permanence of the control group in terms of traditional instruction method. Through this study it has been put forward that compared to the traditional instruction method, the systematic instruction method is the approach with the potential to enrich and enhance the education of traditional Turkish art music in quality and quantity.
