Planning and production stages in ship building industry

A large number of ship owner companies and shipyards face great problems and confusionsabout new ship building. All processes required prior to, during and after the construction leadto serious troubles for the ship owner company, design office and shipyard, which thenimpede effective duty share. Such interruptions threat construction in high budget projects.In this study, the period from decision-making process for a ship to be constructed up to thestage she starts to operate is examined in detail. The process initialised by decision of the shipowner about type and sizes of the ship is discussed in this study along with identification ofdesign, classification, ship building stages and the relations between these stages. The entireperiod, procedure and the cycle is analysed and explained within the frame of a plan, from thematerial of the planned ships, which is entered into the shipyard and stocked, to allconstruction stages, assembly on slipways, and equipping process on the sea.Beginning from the main subject examined in the study, it is generally discussed thatconstructed ships are operated by ship owner companies according to their own ship operationinstructions, and explanatory approaches are presented regarding the scrapping process of theships that have completed their life cycles.Keywords: Ship owner company, ship design, classification society, shipyard, productionstages, ship operation and scrapping.JURY:1.
