Abstract (EN)
Antalya Bay, one of Turkey's key tourism, trade, and fishing centers, holds critical importance for the preservation of the marine ecosystem. However, increasing maritime traffic and ship activities have heightened the risk of marine pollution in the region. Ship-sourced pollution, including petroleum derivatives, bilge water, waste oils, and solid waste, poses significant threats to the marine environment. In this context, the Electronic Ship Monitoring System (EGDS), implemented by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, emerges as an effective solution in combating pollution caused by ships. EGDS uses advanced technologies such as high-resolution cameras, surface radars, and an Automatic Ship Identification System (AIS) at 22 monitoring points to provide 24/7 surveillance and control of marine traffic. The system enforces penalties on polluting ships, creating a deterrent effect while contributing to environmental sustainability. However, for the system to operate more effectively, the integration of technological innovations, personnel training, international collaborations, and strengthened legal frameworks are necessary. Proposed solutions for preserving the marine ecosystem in Antalya Bay include the adoption of artificial intelligence, drone technology, improved waste management systems, and enhanced compliance with international environmental standards. These recommendations provide a strategic framework for preventing marine pollution and ensuring sustainable environmental management. EGDS stands out as a critical tool in the environmental protection of Antalya Bay and serves as a model that can be adopted internationally for combating marine pollution.
