Spatial development and land use of Gemlik city

Cities reveal the feature of dynamic structures that are constantly evolving throughout the historical process. From the time that they were founded to today, they have developed and grown depending on the function, and again, they have been turned into a residential area by many nations. Cities also increase in terms of population in parallel with their development. With increasing population, potential of using existing land and urban land use are changing. Especially rapid and unplanned developments can be the reason of great problems in terms of spatial development of the city. Again, functions of using lands have great importance in determining the development directions of the city. Especially the determination of the changes occurring on the lands has great importance for planned studies. In this study, the spatial development of the city of Gemlik has been revealed in the historical process, land use changes in the study area have been analyzed with reasons of changes and the directions of development of the city have been determined. Today's urban developments of Gemlik and land use functions have been discussed in detail. In this way, city's development directions in the future and functions that will show growth have been foreseen. In this way, important bases for the projects and works to be done about Gemlik have been formed. CORINE System was used to while determining the development in the last 30 years of urban and other function areas in the city. As a result of the analysis, which covered a total area of 157.72 hectares in 1990, is located on an area of 409.21 hectares with the start of 2019. Thus, the city development process that occurred in Gemlik in the last 30 years has been determined. So that, the area of Gemlik that covered 8.12% of working space in 1990 has spread to 21.06% of the area today. Agriculture and mixed farming areas got narrow in the city with this development. Industrial activities, which are one of the most important factors in the development of Gemlik City, have been an important factor in this growth. Development directions of the city have been detected as with the axis of North, East and South West. The factors that affect the development of the city have been examined in detail.
