Calisthenic exercise training and exercise training using xbox kinect: Comparison of effects on balance and proprioception in young adults

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the effects of exergame and calisthenic exercise training on balance and proprioception examined. 85 healthy and young adults were included in the study. The subjects were divided into three groups as Exergame (n = 28), Calisthenic (n = 28) and Control (n = 29). 20.000 Leaks, River Rush, Rally Ball, Reflex Ridges and Space Ball Xbox Kinect games played in Exergame group. Calisthenic exercises were performed in the calisthenic group. In the control group, home exercises were applied. All programs were performed for 30 minutes and twice a week for a total period of 8 weeks. Balance was measured with the Biodex Balance System. Proprioception was evaluated with the Android phone app Goniometer Pro which measures the angle. Fatigue was measured with Modified Borg Scale. The level of enjoyment of physical activity was evaluated with Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale. All assessments were performed before and after 8 weeks of intervention. After 8 weeks of intervention, postural stability was increased in all three groups (p <0.05). The risk of falling of the Calisthenic group decreased and proprioception improved (p <0.05). Physical Activity Satisfaction Scale scores increased in Exergame group (p <0.05). The results of the study showed that exergame exercises increased enjoyment from physical activity and balance. Although calisthenic exercise training had positive effects on balance and proprioception, results supported that exergame exercise training would be more motivating to ensure continuity of exercise in long-term applications.
