The effect of case based learning on academic achivement of students at general chemistry lesson for acid and base topic

This study was aimed to investigate cased based learning effect on academic achievement and opinion of students attended general chemistry course.Research group was composed of two groups attended general chemistry course at Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Science and Mathematics Fields Education in 2011-2012 semesters. One of them was selected as control and the other one was selected as experimental group. ?Acids and Bases? subject was applied conventional teaching techniques and case based learning to control and experimental groups, respectively. First class students to the related department and having first time general chemistry lesson were requirements of research group.Whether meaningful differences for academic achievement of students between experimental and control group or not will be evaluated with using SPSS program. It was found that significance differences for achievement points of post test between experimental and control group in favour of experimental group (p<0.05) according to the independent samples of t-test analysis results.Students? opinions on applied technique were determined with quasi-structured interviews and results were evaluated with context analysis a one of qualitative analysis technique. It was observed that, case based learning technique was supported to the relationship with daily life and also stimulated students for working.
