An investigation of the relationship between the tendency of showing delinquent behaviours and music education in general high school students (Example of the province of Ankara)

The aim of this research is to investigate the tendency of showing delinquent behaviours in general high school students that is differentiated or not according to the music education which is taken by the students.The research is the descriptive one which is used the literature searching model. The 2009-2010 term students who are educated on general high schools in Ankara consist of the population of this study. Also the sample consists of 486 general high school students who are educated on the 10th and 11th grades in lower, middle and upper socioeconomic levels in Ankara.The forms which are developed by the researcher like personal information form, social (musical) activities information form and delinquent behaviours scale are applied to the sample. In the research; descriptive statistic methods, indepentent-samples t test for comparing two groups, one way ANOVA for comparing more than two groups, Scheffe test for equality of the group variance and Tamhane test for inequality of the group variance are used for analyzing data.In the result of this research, its found that there is statistically significant difference in the tendency of showing delinquent behaviours between the general high school students who have music education in various classes, play an instrument and continue it, join to the musical activities in primary school and high school, join to the other social activities in or out of the school and the students who never have music education and never join any of the social activities. Beside this, the result of this research indicates that the boys have more tendency of showing delinquent behaviours than the girls. On the contrary, statistically significant difference is not found in the tendency of showing delinquent behaviours of general high school students according to the classes, the living or non-living / own or step parents, educational status of the family and the number of siblings. As a result of this findings, some suggestions are improved for importance and functionality of music education.
