To determine difficulties met in sublearning field of geometry

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to find out the understanding level of different students concerning the features of line, ray, angle, geometrical objects and study the difference in misunderstandings, misconceptions that occur as a result of real world intuitions and find out the learning levels for some concepts. For this purpose, the issues determined in the light of the relevant literature, have been applied to 10 students in the guidance of an expert, expressions causing misunderstandings have been determined and incomplete expressions have been corrected. The questionnaire prepared at the end has been applied to 6-8 class students randomly chosen from central schools in Bolu. (N=367). According to answers given to the questionnaire, percentage calculations have been made and subject areas causing difficulty have been identified. In order to understand the reason of this difficulty, half structured interviews have been prepared for students randomly chosen among those who said, ?I understood nothing?, ?I somewhat understood?, and those who said, ?I completely understood? for hard subjects. (N=36)The findings o this study show that students difficultly understand, ?The area and volume of three-dimensional objects', 'Space and environmental relationships of linear shapes', 'Lines and angles they create', 'Perspective' and 'Trigonometric values' among concepts and subjects they learn in geometrical sublearning field. It has been concluded that, to forget concepts in higher classroom levels, not to handle the subject in association with others and that students don?t learn withing experience is the reason of difficulty in learning. The basic suggestion of the study is that teachers should take into consideration results found out about concepts and subject areas that cause difficulty according to this study.Key words: Comprehension of students, learning difficulties, sublearning fields of geometry.
