Abstract (EN)

Twentieth-century people experienced rapid historical events, leading them to attempt to understand the dynamics of a newly shaping world. This process of Britain in the modern world between world wars is displayed in Orwell's Coming Up for Air (1939) and The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), which present auto-diegetic middle-class narrators whose minds revolve between socialist and capitalist ideals, modernist and traditional lifestyles. In Coming Up for Air, the middle-class narrator who lives between world wars presents his ideas about the modern world and class issues. In The Road to Wigan Pier, the middle-class narrator travels to Northern England to explain the working class's challenging conditions. The loss of status and the feeling of dislocation in the lives of middle-class narrators cause confusion and uncertainty concerning their future and place in society. Throughout both books, the narrators remain in liminal space, as they are neither completely part of the working class nor genuinely belong to the middle class. This study explores the liminal mind style of George Orwell's middle-class narrators who encounter conflicting ideologies, clashing between socialist and capitalist ideas, and traditional and modernist lifestyles. The study is conducted within the framework of stylistics, emphasizing the narrators' mind styles through modality, epithets, and relevant stylistic devices to show the liminal space they experienced in the 1930s. The findings reveal that the narrator's liminality concludes with his integration into society in Coming Up for Air, while the quasi-fictional narrator experiences permanent liminality in The Road to Wigan Pier.
