George Orwell's approach to literary journalism: The analysis of Down and Out in Paris and London, The Road to Wigan Pier and Hommage to Catalonia

The subject of this study is George Orwell's approach to literary journalism. Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London, The Road To Wigan Pier and Hommage To Catalonia were analyzed and the way literary journalism was formed in Orwell was interpreted. In this study, qualitative content analysis was used. Furthermore, three works of Orwell were analyzed according to seven literary journalism features which are as follows: Stage by Stage Design/Formation, Third Person Point of View, Full Registration or Full Dialogue, Situation Details, Document Based Topics, To Do Deep And Detailed Research and To Be The Subject Of Events/Issues and Literary Narration. According to the results, it was seen that Orwell did not use the Full Registration or Full Dialogue feature in his three works and he partially used the Narration from the Third Person Perspective, besides that, Orwell preferred not to include a lot of dialogue and to use first person point of view in his works. Instead of chronologizing events, Orwell gives place to flashbacks. He writes about the events and subjects which he listed in order to provide integrity, interest and fluency with deep and long descriptions. Orwell gives a literary feel to his works by using literary elements in descriptions such as signs, symbols, similes, anthropomorphizing and dramatization. At the same time, it was seen that Orwell prioritizes spatial descriptions rather than descriptions of a person.
