Abstract (EN)
This dissertation emphasizes the significance of the route selection study in large scale- linear engineering structure projects, providing the Ankara Water Supply Project as a real case study. Timing, cost, stability-safety, and environmental impact assessment are the principal concerns which have to be taken into consideration and look throughout them in all phases of an engineering project. Dynamic character of an engineering project may lead the client to save time, money and environment. General geology, hydrogeology and engineering geology models form an essential base to prepare a sound geotechnical model. Reliability of each model study depends on that of tiie former. Furthermore, the phases of the model studies need more effort in the order given above. The aforementioned engineering principals and approaches enable engineers to conduct a more feasible and comprehensible project as evident in the actual case studies provided in the text. The E5 (pipeline) alternative proposed in this study has numerous advantages against the Köroğludağı (tunnel) alternative (being studied since 1960s) to transmit Gerede basin water to Ankara. Engineering characteristics of the lithological units which can be faced to along to the E-5 pipe-line, detail discontinuities survey have been investigated. The cut-sites of the channel in which the pipe-line will be constructed have been analysed kinematically to define plane failure, wedge failure and toppling. Varities of the stresses' ratio which affects design in the Işıklı Tunnels in Köroğludağı alternative have also been thought by using final elements method. The E-5 altenative does not include any tunnel and although there is a water supply project provides secondary energy. All points along the alignment are accessible. It does not have any environmental impacts.
