Wearable electronic applications for microstrip patch antenna design and analysis

Abstract (EN)
With the development of technology, wearable devices are one of the most interesting topics in today's electronics and telecommunications field. In this study, it is aimed to design and manufacture micro strip patch antennas used in wearable electronic applications in accordance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. The biggest factor in the selection of this subject can be stated as a multi-disciplinary study of wearable device technology and computational science and engineering, which is shown among the priority areas of our country with advancing technology. Within the scope of the study, two antenna designs that radiate at the desired frequency and have appropriate characteristics were carried out thanks to the electromagnetic simulation program. Numerical analyses were performed with Ansys HFSS based on the finite element method (FEM). First, the design and dosimetric analysis of a two-band wearable microstrip patch antenna is presented. The designed antenna emits 3.6GHz, 7GHz when placed on the human body. The insulator material of the antenna is FR4 with dimensions of 25×25×1.5 mm3, with a dielectric permittivity of 4.4 and a loss tangent of 0.02. The antenna is supplied with 1 mW of power, which is 50 Ω compatible. The proposed antenna resonates in the Sub-6 5G bands and in the S and C bands. Experimental measurements of the antenna show that radiations at 3.8GHz and 7GHz were observed. A brain phantom was also made, and a thermal camera was used to measure and observe the temperature variation. The second antenna operates at 31GHz and 50GHz mmWave frequencies. Antenna dimensions are 6×5×0.55 mm3. The insulator material of the antenna is modelled as Rogers RT/duroid 5880 material with a dielectric constant of 2.2 and a loss tangent of 0.0009. In addition, dosimetric analyses in the human tissue model were performed.
