Examining the problem of language, identity and culture in migration literature in the context of comparative literature

This study aims to examine how authors address language, culture and identity issues in immigration and immigrant literature. It also seeks to evaluate the linguistic, sociological, and psychological aspects of the subjects and themes through an analysis of the structural elements used. In this study, the works of Gaye Hiçyılmaz's Against The Storm (Fırtnaya Karşı) and Frozen Waterfall (Donmuş Çalayan), Monica Ali's Brick Lane, and Edna O'Brien's The Country Girls (Taşra Kızları) are examined in the context of the relationships between identity, culture and migration. Examining the conflicts faced by immigrant characters in the works of writers who have immigrated to England from various geographical backgrounds and have embraced English culture, this analysis explores the themes, topics, and structural elements of their works. Key concepts of literary analysis, such as character, time, space, and migration, are utilized to deepen our understanding of these works. The concept of (a)culturation is used to analyse the social and individual issues that occur both before and after migration, as well as the challenges faced by immigrants in their interactions with the host society. We used a combination of research methods from comparative literature and insights from various theorists. One such theory we employed was the "Migration Culture and Conflict Model", developed by Ibrahim Sirkeci and Jeffrey Cohen. This model offers a theoretical framework for examining migration literature by incorporating data from other social sciences. Additionally, we incorporated the methodology called "Conflict and (a)culturation" by Ali Tilbe, which presents a two-level reading approach to analysing migration literature. By using these approaches, we aimed to achieve objective research results and explore the works of migration literature from different perspectives.
