The last decade witnessed a great development in the fields of communications and multimedia techniques, which has led to the need of using techniques for protecting copyright and reducing of illegal copying. The human iris biometric as a watermark embedded within one of the types of multimedia is considered as an emerging and effective technique for copyright protection. An algorithm based on human iris as a watermark embedded within a digital image in order to protect its copyright, has been designed and implemented in this research. The proposed algorithm consists of two main parts: the first extracts iris code, while the second embeds the extracted iris code as watermark in a digital image to protect its ownership. The iris segmentation and iris feature extraction phases are considered the most important phases of the first part. In the iris segmentation phase, the two circles the (internal (pupil) and external (Iris) of the iris area) are detected by using Daugman Integro-Differential Operator after the approximate center of the iris center has been detected. At the same phase, the upper and lower eyelids are determined by using the Linear Hough Transform. While during the iris feature extraction phase, the (1D-Log Gabor Filter) is used to extract iris code. In the second part, the extracted iris code is embedded as a watermark on a set of images to protect their ownership by using (LSB) algorithm based on (XOR) method. The experimental results of the first and second parts proved the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithm. The results of iris segmentation were accurate and the proposed algorithm (LSB) has shown its effectiveness in hiding the code by: firstly, computing and analyzing the metrics Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio(PSNR) , Normalized Correlation(NC), and secondly, comparing the original iris code with the extracted one by using (Hamming Distance), and finally by observing that there is no large massive distortion in the cover image after embedding the iris code in it.
