Abstract (EN)

Human eye perceives a light which flashes above a certain frequency as a constant light. Goal of the study is to develop a method and device which determines threshold frequency also called critical flicker frequency, in which a certain color of flashing light applied to human eye can be perceived as a constantly flashing light. "Critical Flicker Frequency" is a well-known and practiced test method in retinal diseases and diagnosis of optic neuritis. The flicker test was introduced by Aulhorn and Trauzettel-Klosinski. It was described to differentiate between normal subjects who perceive a brightness enhancement between 5 and 20 Hz (Brucke-Bartley effect), and patients with optic neuritis who perceive a brightness decrease between 5 and 20 Hz (main criterion) and a brightness enhancement between 1 and 3 Hz (Hiss et al. 1993). The ability to detect intermittent light and dark alternations of a visual stimulus (flicker or temporal visual processing) is an important component of visual function throughout the field of view. Rapid changes in the luminance or contrast of a stimulus can be important for detecting environmental changes, motion, and awareness of objects in peripheral vision.
