Typefaces as a typographic element in graphic design and typeface design principles

Abstract (EN)

While design designed as the defining process of the product before production as form and function, one of the design fields graphic design defined by its message sending, product or service presenting function as 2-dimensional surfaces. The main two components of graphic design are typography and visuals like photographs or illustrations. Typography with its changing meaning, during the whole journey, which tooks ages defined as the art, method and techniques of writing. While writing changing its materials and methods from stone and carving tools; materials and methods also affected writing's form and developed it. Printing press reached in Europe concluded in the mass production of books and the developing materials, methods and the occurance of the typeface as a concept. The typefaces designed by letters, numbers, punctuation marks and symbols which are same as style. Pages created by composing metal types in printing presses, transported to digital world by the invention of computers. Like printing and publishing, designing typefaces is also became digital and an endles amount occured. If so, how can typefaces designed, what elements are used and like every design field are there any principles, if there are, what are the principles of typeface design? Because typeface design is a subfield of graphic design and typography, all the elements and principles of graphic design and typography scanned, and trying to find the elements and principles of typeface design. In this way the field of typeface design which is common in worldwide determined and listed. According to the research there are five elements, which typeface design used: dot, line, form, tone and space. This dissertation proposed that typeface designed organizes these five elements according to its fourteen principles; which are size – proportion, legibility, balance, unity, continuation, hierarchy, contrast, rhytm, emphasis, type of the alphabet, scanning, applicability, knowledge of the anatomy of type, and design theory.
