2. ABSTRACTINVESTIGATION OF IN VITRO SUSCEPTIBILITY OF GRAM POSITIVECOCCI TO QUINOPRISTON/DALFOPRISTIN AND COMPARING THEACTIVITY OF THIS DRUG WITH SOME OF OTHER ANTIBIOTICS?Altough there is a rapid development in the antibacterial therapy during therecent years, the prevalence of the infections caused by multi-drug-resistantstaphylococci, enterecocci and some other clinical important Gram-positive cocci hasbeen incrased. These organisms are often found as resistant to many widely usedantibiotics and some therapeutic problems have been emerged in the infections of theseorganisms.Quinopristin/dalfopristin which is not in use in Turkey yet, is the firstparenterally usable streptogramin antibiotic. The drug acts via irreversible binding theboth components to subunit of 50S bacterial ribosome. In this study, we aimed to investigate in vitro activity of quinopristin/dalfopristinand the other widely used antibiotics 300 Gram-positives cocci which where isolatedfrom clinical samples in Clinic Microbiology Laborotary of Firat University MedicalSchool between June 2004 - March 2005. Of these strains 41 were identified asStaphylococcus aureus, 52 were Staphylococcus epidermidis, 17 were Staphylococcussaphrophyticus, 16 were Staphylococcus hominis, 5 were Staphylococcus haemolyticus,3 were Staphylococcus warneri, 2 were Staphylococcus schleiferi, 5 wereStaphylococcus caprae; 44 were identified as Enterococcus faecalis, 22 wereEnterococcus faecium, 5 were Enterococcus avium and 3 were Enterococcus hiroe; 27were identified as Streptococcus spp., 16 were Group D Streptococci, 6 were Group Astreptococci, 6 were Group B streptococci and 3 were pneumococci.3In the disc diffusion antibiogram, 100% of S. aureus and CoNS strains, 14% ofE. faecalis strains 73% of E. faecium strains were deteced as suspectible toquinopristin/dalfopristin.In the susceptibility test, 66.1% of staphylococci straims found as susceptible tomethicillin, 62.2% to erithromycin, 66.3% to ciprofloxacin, 89.1% to clindamycin,94.8% to riphampin; 65.3% of streptococci strains found as susceptible to erithromycin,45.9% to ciprofloxacin, 84.6%, 85.2% to chloramphenicol and gentamycin, orderly. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of quinopristin/dalfopristincombination which is not in use in Turkey yet but probably in near future will be one ofthe most often used antibiotics to infections diseases, to staphylococci and streptococci.By the way of measuring the efficacy a group of other antibiotics to the aim ofcompairing the activity of this new drugs with the others, we supposed to reachclinicilly usable data which is very helpfull to drive rote of the therapy.Key Words: Quinopristin/dalfopristin, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcusspp., Enterococcus spp., CoNS, disk diffusion.4
