Abstract (EN)

This thesis analyzes the repercussions of the Korean War on Turkish public opinion through the concepts of militarism and militarization. Militarism is not only considered in its military aspect but is also examined as a societal process that generates violence, incorporating social and cultural dimensions. The study explores how Turkey's participation in the Korean War was legitimized and how militarization processes mobilized public support by analyzing the structures, actors, and mechanisms involved. The Korean War occurred during Turkey's transition from a single-party regime to a multiparty system. Debates on democratization, ideological divisions between the right and left, and political confrontations between the government and opposition shaped the war's discourse. This study critically examines local and global Cold War dynamics, highlighting traces of anti-communist militarism in Turkey's political structure, intellectual sphere, and collective memory. The research is based on a thematic archival analysis (1947–1953), including parliamentary debate records and primary sources. It examines national newspapers (Zafer, Vatan, Hürriyet, Cumhuriyet, Ulus, Yeni Sabah, Kudret) and periodicals from different political orientations: the liberal right (Hür Fikirler, Millet, Haftalık Siyasi Müstakil Gazete), nationalist far-right (Orkun, Büyük Doğu, Serdengeçti), Islamist press (Hür Adam, Sebilürreşad, Selamet), and leftist press (Gerçek, Gün, Markopaşa, Medet, Nuh'un Gemisi). Furthermore, the impact of the Korean War on popular culture and collective memory is examined through novels published after the 60th anniversary of the conflict and the films Ayla (2017) and Taegukgi Hwinalrimyeo (Brotherhood of War, 2004). The comparative analysis of these works highlights their approaches to official discourse, Cold War militarism, and the processes of militarization and social mobilization.
