The influence of the rosicrucian enlightenment on the philosophy of René Descartes

In this study, the parallels between an esoteric and political movement that emerged in the 17th century and the life and philosophy of René Descartes are examined. A mysterious group calling themselves the Rosicrucian Brothers caused significant controversy in a Europe shaken by sectarian turmoil and the chaotic atmosphere leading up to the Thirty Years' War, through three manifestos they published in 1614, 1615, and 1616. In the first of these manifestos, the Fama Fraternitatis, which was distributed in many European countries, it is stated that the manifestos were written for all scholars and notable figures in Europe. Methods are proposed for reorganizing philosophy in the context of the microcosm-macrocosm relationship to discover the light of truth and pursue inner transformation. Within this framework, a call for a "general reform" in line with the spirit of the era was made, and the Papacy was pointed to as the main source of evil in the world. The second manifesto, Confessio Fraternitatis, uses a language parallel in form and style to the first and mentions a book called the "Book of the World," which is said to contain the knowledge of all books. It is promised that this book can be read under the illumination of the knowledge possessed by the Rosicrucian Brothers. Unlike the first two manifestos, the third manifesto, The Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz, is written more in the style of a comedy, narrating the inner journey of the order's founder, Rosenkreutz. After the publication of the manifestos, many writers, scientists, and philosophers across Europe were accused of being members of the Rosicrucians or of sympathizing with their ideas. René Descartes was among those who faced such accusations. In particular, his frequent travels (in line with the rules of the order), his references to the Book of the World, his preference for living in predominantly non-Catholic countries, and the points in his philosophy that parallel Rosicrucian thought raised suspicions that Descartes may have crossed paths with the order. Based on these contexts, traces of the Rosicrucian Brotherhood were sought in Descartes' works. Strong evidence was found suggesting that Descartes, especially in his youth, may have come into contact with this order, and that there are reflections of the order's system of thought in both his early and later works
