Conflicts and conflict resolution processes in Gülten Dayioğlu's children's books

Along with communication, which is indispensable in social life, conflicts also take place. Conflict, which is defined as the disagreement arising from people's different interests, thoughts, beliefs and needs, emerges in various forms. These conflicts are discussed as "person-person (interpersonal conflict), conflict with oneself, person-nature conflict and person-society conflict". The subject in the books and the related events take place through "conflicts". Events and conflicts have an important place in the structuring of the subject in children's books. In the book he reads, the child may encounter people who solve problems in a rational and constructive way, as well as people who solve conflicts with coincidences and extraordinary powers, not with their minds. For this reason, the ways of resolving conflicts in the books that the child reads are closely related to the quality of that book. People develop a solution method by using their value judgments and what they have learned in the conflicts they experience, and they use various strategies to resolve conflicts. Conflict resolution styles can be considered in two groups as constructive and destructive. If conflicts are tried to be resolved through cooperation, a healthy communication can be established. As a result of a well-resolved conflict, all parties benefit. In this study, Gülten Dayıoğlu's children's books, which have an important place in children's literature, are examined in terms of conflicts and conflict resolution processes and their results. For this, 15 books that make up Gülten Dayıoğlu's children's books for the age range of 9-12 were examined. Sever's (2021: 128) classification has been taken into account in the conflicts in the books: Person-person (interpersonal) conflict, conflict with oneself, conflict between person and nature, conflict between person and society. Conflict resolution processes in the books are determined according to the classification of Johnson and Johnson (Öğmüş, 2006: 20): Avoidance-Withdrawal, Compliance-Giving, Use of Force-Forcing, Compromise-Seeing the Problem, Problem Solving-Cooperation. Along with the conflict resolution processes, conflict outcomes are determined: win-lose, lose-lose, win-win. As a result of the study, it is seen that interpersonal conflicts (62.77%) are mostly found in Gülten Dayıoğlu's children's books for the 9-12 age range. The most commonly used solution strategy in interpersonal conflicts is the use of force-force (65.60%). The majority of these interpersonal conflicts result in win-lose (71.52%). The fact that interpersonal conflicts are mostly resolved with the use of force-coercion strategy and the win-lose results are predominant show that the works are mostly far from a constructive conflict resolution approach. It is thought that this study will give a different perspective to the conflicts in children's works.
