An investigation on violence in Gülten Dayıoğlu's novels

Abstract (EN)

The phenomenon of violence, which can be encountered in all areas of daily life, is also encountered in children's literature. For the child who encounters the phenomenon of violence through a book, the form and result of the violence are important. The violence faced by the child in literary works should be presented according to the reality of the child. In this study, it is aimed to examine the violence phenomenon in children's books of Gülten Dayıoğlu, one of the writers of today's children's literature that meets with child readers. The universe of the research consists of the novels Gülten Dayıoğlu wrote for children and young people. The sample of the study was determined by "criterion sampling", one of the purposeful sampling methods included in the qualitative research approach. Accordingly, in determining the books to be examined, it was determined that "the books addressed children and young people aged nine-twelve and included the problem of violence. The sample of the study consists of twenty-five books written by the author under the title of children's novels and youth novels. The data source of the research is the examined children's novels. The data were collected by document analysis method. Content analysis, which is frequently used in qualitative research, was used to analyze the data collected through document analysis. In analyzing the data, although there are no categories developed or standardized in accordance with each study, the categories included in previous theoretical studies were used in this study. The European Union in the preparation of the relevant coding forms of violence used in the study and Combating Domestic Violence of the project jointly conducted by the Republic of Turkey has been utilized. In this study, the concept of 'violence' has been accepted as the main category. Sub-categories are psychological violence, sexual violence, economic violence, physical violence, seizure of money, verbal fighting, blocking access to information, not letting anyone contact with anyone, and not being allowed to meet with parents. In addition to the types of violence included in this project, the types of violence that appear in the books and do not fall into the categories included here are discussed under the title of "other". According to the determined categories; 25 works written by Gülten Dayıoğlu were examined, and a total of 446 expressions of violence were identified in all of the examined works. According to the findings, statements reflecting the psychological violence were found at the rate of 70% in the books.
