Abstract (EN)
In the historical scale, the ?motif? or the ?ornament?, which has been indispensable for the human being, depicts itself in hundreds forms of art brought up as the result of centuries. This field, which generated products in many spectrums from daily use to architecture, also has been an element that determined the periods, as part of the social order and as a category of art. In this context, this analysis contains the descriptions made based on the definitions with the aim of establishing a positioning for the concepts of ?motif? and ?ornament? in art history and historical categories. And it directs us to contemplate on the causes and extensions of the historical recurrence of the motif when it has acquired currency on the agenda again in contemporary art practice.Motif and ornament concepts are systems of values belonging to cultures and they refer to the social order establishing these values by using the possibilities of the visual terminology. The modernist thought and modern art which claimed that we have to abandon the ornament with the suggestion of Adolf Loos in the last century have never been able to purge of ornament. Instead, it preferred motifs again and today, the ritual of the traditional in modern art is replaced by the new trends in the contemporary art.The motifs have become more prominent and sophisticated as the reflections of the cultures. However, many artists, who are aware that the way to being universal passes from the individual ? , use the motif today in order to claim a universal value and they try to discover the boundaries related to the primary origins of the art and the language offered by the motif concept which is almost of the same age with humanity and contribute to its process which still exists. Ornamentation and motif generated a rich language which goes between the conceptual questions within contemporary art and visual representation.
