Social identity of married women living in a family apartment in the context of sociology of everyday life

This research was conducted with the aim of focusing on the ongoing dynamics in family buildings, which hold an important place in Turkey's social structure, recognizing its significance in social studies. In this context, the experiences of living in a family building hold an important place for women who sustain various roles in social life. The study examines how married women perceive living in family buildings and how their everyday actions shape their roles as wives, mothers, and daughters-in-law. The research investigates how the daily life experiences of married women with children in family buildings affect their social identity perceptions. The roles undertaken by women in family buildings and their impact on their social identities are examined through examples from daily life. Qualitative research methodology was adopted for this study. Data was collected from participants through a socio-demographic information form and a semi-structured interview form in a phenomenological pattern. Interviews were conducted with women residing in family buildings in Istanbul, Bursa, and Ankara, aged between 28 and 55. The collected data was transcribed into written form through note-taking and analyzed through content analysis. Three themes were identified in the analysis stage: family building experience, daily effects of social relationships in family buildings, and prominent roles in social identity. Findings were shared following the establishment of categories and codes associated with the themes. The results of the study indicate that women's experiences in family buildings influence their perception of family building living. Additionally, it was found that the daily actions of women with children are largely shaped by the role of motherhood. However, despite being mothers, it was also found that due to various expectations of service, the role of daughter-in-law dominates their social identity. Participants were found to benefit from social support and solidarity in their family building lives while also facing challenges regarding individual freedom and autonomy. Intra-family relationships deeply influence traditional gender roles, as well as the daily lives and relationships of women. Women strive to balance meeting their families' expectations within these variables while also attempting to preserve their individual needs and identities.
