Abstract (EN)

Gymnasion case in South Anatolian cities is based on both an abstract and a concrete ground. Gymnasion is most important place that are not just training grounds. Gymnasion is a place where spiritual education is provided as well as physical education, and the foundation of civic consciousness is laid in the gymnasion. The management of the gymnasion which is thought to be of Cretan and Spartan origin, was managed by gymnasiarkhos. Gymnasiarkhos made a large donation to the gymnasion, but he made these donations not only to be useful to the city but also to gain fame. Olive oil was very important for the gymnasion, and gymnasiarkhos covered the expenses of olive oil for both religious rituals and sports events. Gymnasiarkhos was a leiturgia performed for a year in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, but after the 4th century BC, it took the form of a permanent gymnasiarkhia in later periods. The gymnasion changed shape during the Roman Period and took the form of a bath-gymnasion. In this study, the phenomenon of gymnasion in the southern regions of Anatolia will be examined in the light of inscriptions. With epigraphic and numismatic evaluation, the phenomenon of gymnasion and gymnasion categories in Lycia, Pisidia and Cilicia, the way the gymnasiarkhos came to office, their activities during their duties, their honoring with eikon and various gifts, the female gymnasiarkhos and the permanent gymnasiarkhia phenomenon will be examined with inscriptions. In the catalog section, inscriptions from Lycia, Pamphylia, Pisidia, and Kilikia will be translated and the phenomenon of gymnasion will be tried to light on.
