Altars of South Lykaonia legion

The area where is surrounded by Cappadocia at East; Cilicia at South; Pamphylia and Psidia at West; Phyrygia and Galatia at North is called Lykaonia Region in ancient geography. However, related area is a region where Konya and Karaman Provinces settle today. It is known that altars in the ancient period were used in official buildings, dwellings, tombs, and sanctuaries. Altars whose general typology are specified in studies are defined as the place or constructions where religious ceremonies were performed and also sacrifices and vows were submitted. The altars which we reviewed have not been comprehensively analyzed before. Again, the altars that we scrutinized are composed of samples determined at the end of surface explorations as from 2005. Typologies of altars were revealed by this study; they were classified and described in detail. Figure and ornament elements on altars were compared with similar samples. The altars which have Ancient Greek inscription were translated; we obtained results relating to the intended use. Another result of the study is that rectangular-bodied altars were prevalently utilized in Lykaonia region. It is certainly revealed via both ornament elements and comments of inscriptions that some of the altars functioned as vow; some of them functioned as commendation tool and tombstone as well. Being the first study on altars in the related region brings qualification to this paper to be a reference guide for next studies.
