A study on human factor in daily boating accidents

This study examines the human factor in daily boating accidents. There is no detailed statistical data available concerning daily boating accidents in Turkey other that the published news or the information provided by the local business operators. In Turkey, very few academic studies are made on daily boating accidents, by examining the human factor in daily boating accidents it is aimed to determine the effect of human factor on daily daily boating accidents and to contibute to the elimination of the deficiency in the related literature. In this study, two-stage interviews were carried out by the experts who currently work in the field. With the first expert group, the stages of a daily boat trip operation steps were determined. In the second stage, the determined operation steps were evaluated by a different group of experts. Whilst determining the operation steps, the unique characteristics of each region such as; seabed structure, marine species and nearby beaches, were also considered. In this study, Bayes' Theorem Success Likelihood Index Methodology (SLIM) were used to compare human error rates of different steps of daily boating operations and solutions that would contribute to prevention of accidents were discussed.
