Evaluation of anxiety levels of parents of children who will spend the day orthopedic surgery

Abstract (EN)

The study is a descriptive and interrelated study in order to evaluate the anxiety levels of the parents of children aged 0-18 who are going to undergo day surgery. The study population consisted of parents of the children who hospitalized for surgical intervention in Pediatric Surgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology and General Surgery Departments of a hospital between August 2018 / February 2019. Sample of the study was comprised from 91 parents. "Parent Information Form" and "State -Trait Anxiety Inventory" were used for data collection. Data analysis was performed with percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation, t test, Pearson correlation analysis (ANOVA)(SPSS 22.00). It was found that 51.6% of the parents were 35 years of age and below, 59.3% of them were mothers, 41.8% were housewives, 94.5% were married, 48.4% were high school graduates and 54%, 9 is working; and 28.6% of children were between 12-15 years of age, 75.8% of them were attending school and 31.9% of them were educated in high school. The mean scores of the parents on State-Trait Anxiety Scale were 54.62 ± 8.65 and 43.09 ± 6.99, respectively. The mean scores of mothers' Continuous Anxiety scores were found to be higher than the mean scores of fathers. (p<0,01). State- Trait Anxiety scores of the parents who were informed about anesthesia were found to be higher than those of parents who were not informed.(p<0,01). As a result, it was determined that parents experienced moderate anxiety according to State-Trait Anxiety scores. It has been found also, individual factors affecting anxiety levels of parents during daytime orthopedic surgery. In this respect, it can be suggested that nurses can plan the training which parents need, and provide support groups to share parents' feelings and thoughts in order to reduce the anxiety levels of parents who will have child undergo daily orthopedic surgery.
