The position of religion in today's mother-daughter relationships

Under the influence of modernisation, significant changes are taking place in people's lives in Turkey as in the whole world. There are ruptures in religious and cultural values, in the way religious and conservative families perceive and live religion. The aim of the study is to reveal how the social changes experienced at the national level in Turkey affect the ways of perceiving and living religion in the relationships between families and their daughters in Rize province. In order to make a comparison, the study was conducted with 11 mothers and their 13 daughters using a semi-structured interview form. As a result of the research, it was understood that the conservative/religious understanding in Rize province generally resists modernisation. Nevertheless, in the daily lives of mothers, traces of modernisation can be seen in addition to their conservative/religious attitudes. For the daughters of the mothers, they shape their lives with a more modern understanding of religion than their mothers; we can talk about a secularisation in which the influence of religion decreases and descends from the public to the individual sphere, rather than a secularisation in which religion is not in their lives
