The effect of contemporary art's integrated relationship with entomology in raising awareness

Abstract (EN)

In this study, which focuses on how the influence of entomology and art on each other from past periods is reflected in today's works of art, the importance of insects in terms of ecological balance and the history of science is first mentioned. The first positions of insect images in the concept of art and their reasons are discussed. After the definition of entomology, under the name of cultural entomology within entomology, the extent to which the use of insects in different cultures and daily life areas feeds today's art has been evaluated through artwork analysis. In addition, entomological forms with sociological reflections from ancient civilizations to the present day are mentioned. In the process from Ancient Egypt to European art, there are religious, social and intellectual messages that are intended to be given to the audience with insect images, which generally appear as symbols and icons. Especially its importance in religions, the position and meanings of insects in belief systems constituted the majority of the first part In the second part, the relationship between art and entomology, which continued until the 21st century, is discussed through the works of artists. However, artists who consistently use certain insects in their works without a chronological order are analyzed. By giving information about the entomological images in their works, the reasons for the artists' choice of insect images in their works are emphasized. Thus, the place and importance of insect forms in art from past to present has been tried to be illuminated. In the 21st century, artists who utilized entomology generally included anthropogenic problems, including the damage to the ecological balance caused by the extinction of insect species, in their works in order to raise awareness. The way they express the sensitivity of the subject and the importance of insects, the examination of the changing position of entomological images used in the works of pre-21st century painters in today's artworks, the techniques and artistic tendencies they use in this context constitute the final part and purpose of the research. The effects of contemporary art practices on human beings and the ethics of artists' use of insects as art materials are questioned in order to raise awareness in cooperation with entomologists. In this research, artwork analysis, literature review, visual sources and compilation methods were preferred as data collection methods.
