Transcription and evaluation of the 438th register dated 1273 (1856-1857) in Istanbul

Madrasas, the most important formal educational institutions of Turkish Islamic states, were established on a system inherited from the Seljuks to the Ottoman Empire. They remained an important component of the Ottoman education system from the founding of the state until the 20th century. In this study, the Population Register of Medreses Nos. 24-45 in Istanbul, dated H. 1273 (M. 1856-1857), found in the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of the Turkish Republic Presidential Archives, was examined and the data obtained from the register was evaluated. The introduction of the thesis provides information on the development and transformation of madrasas throughout history. The first chapter provides information on the Ottoman madrasa organisation. The second chapter contains information and evaluations on how the number of madrasas in the Ottoman period was determined, the population censuses in the Ottoman Empire, the registers in which these censuses were recorded, and the registers kept specifically for determining the number of madrasas.
