Abstract (EN)

This study aims to evaluate teacher training policies and curriculum structure within the Ottoman education system by transcribing the work titled "Dârü'l-muallimînProgramı" (Teachers' College Program) dated H.1312/M.1894. The education system in the Ottoman Empire, which had been centered on madrasas since the classical period, underwent significant transformations after the Tanzimat reforms, and teacher training became one of the fundamental components of modernization. In this context, the 1894 program is both a unique document that sheds light on Ottoman educational history and a concrete reflection of the transition to modern pedagogical methods. The first part of the study examines the Ottoman classical education system, the structure and functioning of madrasas, primary schools, and traditional methods of education. It then examines the establishment process, curriculum structure, and functioning of the Dârülmuallimîn, the teacher training institutions within the framework of post-Tanzimat education reforms. The diversity of courses taught, particularly at the Rüşdiye, İdadiye, and Sultaniye levels, reflects the goal of training teacher candidates in a multifaceted manner. In addition to language courses such as Arabic and Persian, courses in mathematics, geography, geometry, science, and foreign languages were indicative of modernization efforts. The second section contains a transcription of the 1894 "Dârü'l-muallimînProgram," while the third section provides a general evaluation and content analysis. In conclusion, this thesis fills a gap in the literature by bringing to light an important source on the teacher training process in the Ottoman education system; it also points to a critical period in Ottoman modernization in terms of education policies. In this respect, the study makes valuable contributions to Ottoman educational history research in terms of both documentation and evaluation.
