Root values in H. Salih Zengin's works

From past to present, there has been an emphasis on the adoption, protection and maintainance of the values and making them pass from one generation to the other through individuals and society. In addition, a large number of studies have been carried out in the fields of values, the values education, the values in children's literature and the ways of reflecting values in children's literature. In syllabus renewal, made by Ministry of Education, in 2017, values have been classified as ten root values which are "justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, helpfulness." The aim of this study is to analyze the fictional works for children of H. Salih Zengin, one of the Children's literature authors of modern day, according to ten root values designated by the Ministry of Education. In the research, the determination process of the data, the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research designs, and the descriptive analysis method for the analysis of data was used. The data of this study has been acquired by 15 works in total which are "Masallı Eğitim Seti (10 books), Devekuşları Plan Yapmaz, Çok Mavi Hikâyeler, Çok Serin Hikâyeler, Şişkonun Bütün Adamlar ı- 1. Dönem-, Şişkonun Bütün Adamları - 2. Dönem-" of H. Salih Zengin. The data, literature scanning and case study research methods have been researched and the values exist in the works, their frequency of appearance and the pages in which they exist have been identified; registrated as a table and remark and have been interpreted with descritive analysis method. It has been observed that all root values are processed in all the works that are the subject of the study and the mostly used value is "love"; while the least mentioned value is "patriotism". However, in many works examined, it has been determined that the values are used indirectly as well as they are used directly. Beside the appearance of the positive values, the existence of the negative values in the work especially in the series of novel "Şişkonun Bütün Adamları" has caught attention. In line with the research, it has been reached that the examined works of H. Salih Zengin have an important content in terms of root values and they are compatible with the root value characteristics and the purpose of program specified in TDOP. In this respect, it has been concluded that the works contain features which can be used in primary school textbooks together with the fields of values education and Turkish education. In the light of the data obtained in the study, there have been made suggestions that the things need to be considered about the processing of root values are included while writing children's book, parents who will guide their children's work selection, and the researchers who will work on H.
