Hafs b. Gıyas is one of the prominent scholar of hadith in the period of atbau?t-tabi?in. He was born and grow up in Kufa. And he was educated by the master of hadith and fıqh in that time. In the time of Harun al-Rasheed (177/793) he has worked as a judge for two years in the east of Baghdad and for thirteen years in Kufa. It is related that he accepted this duty because of bad straits. Hafs was not under the pressure in his opinions. Because of his success in his occupation, after his death it was told that ?the judgeship came to an end?. Hafs was a generous person and he was used to share his salary worth three hundreds drachma with his two frends. Although he has been accepted a trustworthy (sika) teller by the critics he has accused for to be deceptive (mudellis) and his memory has gotten weak. And it is said that to be cautious to his hadiths in that period is must. However his hadith has been respected by Ahl al Sunna and Shi?a. Three or four thousand hadith has been related from Hafs and it?s mentioned that he has got a fascicle containing one hundred seventy hadiths. His hadiths exist in the Kutub al-sittah. Hafs was the prominent companion of Abu Hanifa and listen Abu Hanifa?s book from him and related this books.
