Abandonment in memory of the Qur'an courses: A case study

Purpose: The main purpose of the study is to examine the abandonment of memorization training given in Quran courses affiliated with the Presidency of Religious Affairs (DİB), according to the opinions of individuals who abandoned memorization training and their parents. Does the motivation to start memorization training within the framework of this basic purpose affect the abandonment of memorization? What are the factors that lead to abandonment in the memorization training process? Do the instructors in memorization education affect the abandonment of memorization? Answers to your questions were also sought. Method: The research was designed based on the case design, which is one of the qualitative research approaches. In this context, the situation has been determined as the abandonment of hafiz education. It is aimed to gain in-depth information on the subject, especially the reasons why individuals leave and the process they go through regarding abandonment. Participants were determined using criterion sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods. The basic criterion was determined as individuals who received memorization training in Quran courses affiliated with DIB after 2011 but abandoned memorization training for any reason. Interviews were held with 22 former hafiz candidates and 7 parents who met these criteria. In the research, individuals who abandoned memorization training in private institutions and organizations and individuals who abandoned memorization training before 2011 were excluded from the scope. Semi-structured interview was preferred as the data collection tool. The data obtained; It was uploaded to NVIVO 12 Plus program and analyzed using descriptive analysis technique. Findings: As a result of the analysis, the reasons for abandoning hifz education were classified in the following four main categories: Student-related reasons, instructor-related reasons, reasons due to lack of course opportunities and punishments. Conclusion: Analyzes on the abandonment of hifz education show that there are many factors that affect the abandonment of hifz education. It has been determined that the negativities experienced during the process also have an effect on the abandonment of memorization training. In this context, the study is seen as an important step to eliminate the negativities in the memorization training process and to prevent the abandonment of memorization training.
