Al-Malik Zahir, the founder of the Aleppo branch of the Ayyubids, has taken part in studies on the Ayyubid state and its personalities, but his personality and actions have not been fully examined. As stated in the sources, al-Malik Zahir, who is the favorite son of Sultan Saladin and also has the character of ruler, was born on May 30, 1173 in Cairo. Like other princes of the period, he received education from important scholars in Egypt and Damascus, and in 1183, when he was only ten years old, his father, Sultan Saladin, conferred Haleb on him. However, he was dismissed from his post shortly after. In 1186, one of the bright and most prosperous periods of the city started when al-Malik Zahir becoming the ruler of Aleppo again. In this process, al-Malik Zahir was personally involved in the siege of Tyre, the Antioch campaign, the sieges of Acre and Jaffa, and he fought many battles against the crusaders during the III. Crusade period. After the death of his father Sultan Saladin in 1193, al-Melik Zahir, who was one of the decisive parties in the struggle for the throne between his brothers and his uncle al-Malik Adil, managed to keep the Aleppo and north of Damascus under his control. During the IV. Crusade, which started after the struggle for the throne resulted in his uncle's favor, he always supported the other Ayyubid princes in the Damascus region and expanded his lands by preserving his lands against his uncle's expansionist policy and exhibiting his political administration. Al-Malik Zahir ruled Aleppo, which was bestowed on him by his father, for 31 years, and built and prospered the city and the castle of Aleppo until his death in 1216.
