Halil Fevzi Efendi life works and analysis of his work "el-Hâşiyetü'l-Cedîde Alâ Şerh-i Îsâmi'l-Ferîde

This study examined the book of Filibeli Khalil Favzi (from Plovdiv) (d. 1300/1883) titled al-Hashiyah al-Jadidah 'ala Sharh 'Isam al-Faridah. It examines the general subject of logical istiarah. It is a hashiyah/footnote written for Isamaddin Isfarayini's (d. 945/1538) book titled Sharh Faraid al-favaid li-tahkik ma'ani al-isti'arat. Al-Isfarayini's hashiya was written upon Abu al-Kasim Al-Samarkandi's (d. 888/1483) book titled al-Risala al-farida. This study consists of an introduction and three chapters. The introduction, provides information about the subject, the importance, the reason, the purpose, the scope and the method of the research. After that it provides some evaluations about sources, difficulties encountered and and finally some important information about Hashiyah and balagha/rhetoric. In the first chapter, the lives of Al-Samarkandi, the author of the basic work, and Al-Isferayini, who commented on it was examined. Then, detailed information was given about Khalil Favzi, his life, works and scientific personality. In the second chapter, the reason for writing the Hashiyah, its sources, style, method and the main topics called "Iqd I, II, III" were examined. In the third chapter, Khalil Favzi's objections and opinions about some topics were included. For examples his opinions about istiarah in verbs, letters, common nouns, proper nouns, avsafs, masdars, majazs and his opinions about vad' bi'l-qasd, mawdou lah, al-istiarah al-makniya, al-istiarah al-tamsiliya and tarshih. At the end of the study, the translation of the treatise and some archive documents about Khalil Favzi were added. It can be noted that Khalil Favzi's hashiya titled al-Hashiyah al-Jadidah is the most attractive and in-demand book among all the footnotes written upon al-Isfarayini's book. The hashiyah consists of two volumes. It is based on three main stories called "Iqd". Its parts are divided into subheadings called "faridah". In the hashiyah written in the 19th century, it is seen that the subject of istiarah is examined in detail, conveyed in a controversial style, and evaluated within the framework of different information on the subject. It is believed that Khalil Favzi supported his opinions with the subjects of grammar, logic, theology and philosophy, especially rhetoric. Considering the features identified during the research process, it can be said that the hashiyah is the most comprehensive and original study in nineteeth century in the field of rhetoric.
