The compound sentences in the novel "Mâî ve Siyah" of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil

Servet-i Fünun era is a turning point in Turkish Literature. Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil is one of the most important writers in this era. With the style and technique he used in novels the writer influenced the writers in his period and after him.The most distinct feature of Halit Ziya Usaklıgil?s novels is a dense and embellished language and style. Compound sentences in the writer?s novel Mâî and Siyah which is seen the writer?s these features clearly constitue the esence of our work. It is important to examine these sentences to understant the writer and the novel language of the era.In the introduction part of our work common features of Servet-i Finun era, the importance and place of Halit Ziya in this literary movement, the language and style of the novel Mâî and Siyah and compound sentences are evaluated.After these evaluations, compound words in the novel are examined based on Tahsin Banguoğlu?s views about compound sentences and the original printing in 1914 of the novel Mâî and Siyah. Many examples present all of the compound sentences type in the work. The novelties the writer brings to novel language are understood from these examplesThe examined work and Halit Ziya?s novel writing, his particularity of the language and technique, structures of the compound sentence he often used in his novel and structures of different sentences are tried to be evaluated in the conclusion part of the work.Because of many unknown words and prepositional phrases which is hard to be understood in Mâî and Siyah, a dictionary which consists unfamiliar words in this novel is added to the conclusion of this work to facilitate reading the examined examples.Key Words: Servet-i Fünun, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, Mâî ve Siyah, Compound Sentence
