Abstract (EN)
It does comprehensive research on the influence of the volatile organic compounds emanating from the crude oil tankers on the safety of the ship. These chemical substances, during transportation and storage of crude oil, go into the atmosphere and harm the environment and human health. Within this context, VOC emissions pose a substantial threat to the personnel during tanker operations and thus create serious safety risks, such as explosion and fire. In this respect, the safety issues caused by VOCs are analyzed in more detail herein, while the negative impact of VOCs on personnel health and ship operations is evaluated in case of exposure. Among all of those, this study reviews the effectiveness of the existing safety standards and preventive measures, proposing various strategies to increase ship safety. In particular, it details technological solutions for the reduction of VOC emissions, such as gas recovery systems and closed system storage, and operational methods, such as regular inspection of ship maintenance and ventilation systems, while discussing their positive contribution to ship safety. In addition, it gives suggestions about the regulation and policies to be enforced that could diminish VOC risk such as protecting the health of people at work aboard ships. Thus, the regulation of emissions is one factor important for safe operation that may restrain environmental damage, along with prevention of human illness aboard vessels. In this respect, it is established that effective management of VOC risks is a development that is fundamentally important for environmental sustainability in addition to the health of the ship's personnel.
